À titre d'adjoint principal à la recherche en botanique et de membre du projet de Flore de l'Arctique canadien et de l'Alaska, Paul Sokoloff s'emploie à cataloguer la biodiversité des plantes et lichens de l'Arctique et d'ailleurs. On peut le trouver en expédition botanique dans une région éloignée, dans l'herbier du Musée plongé dans l'étude de spécimens, ou en train de prendre part à des activités de rayonnement au nom du Musée. Ses expéditions scientifiques ne manquent pas de piment : il s'est un jour fait voler ses vêtements dans le sud du Labrador, son canot plein d'échantillons s'est renversé dans la rivière Jacquet au Nouveau-Brunswick, et il a fait une randonnée jusqu'au sommet du mont McGill sur l'île d'Ellesmere en portant des bottes de caoutchouc.

Paul Sokoloff a commencé au Musée en tant qu'étudiant de maîtrise sous la supervision de la botaniste Lynn Gillespie (il a montré que l'astragale de Fernald n'était pas une espèce en soi). Deux jours après avoir soumis sa thèse, il embarquait dans un avion à destination de l'île Victoria dans l'ouest de l'Arctique canadien en tant qu'adjoint de recherche pour le Musée et il ne l’a jamais regretté. Depuis ce premier périple, Paul a participé à neuf expéditions dans l'Arctique avec le Musée. Il a aussi pris part à plusieurs expéditions biologiques à la Mars Desert Research Station.
