Jeff Saarela étudie les plantes et tente de comprendre leurs liens de parenté, les régions du monde où elles croissent et la façon dont on peut les distinguer les unes des autres par leur aspect et leur ADN. Il s'intéresse en particulier aux graminées, aux carex et aux espèces apparentées. Certaines de ses recherches concernent les plantes de l'Arctique canadien, une région qui connaît de profonds bouleversements environnementaux.

Ce botaniste étudie la collection de l'Herbier national du Canada (CAN) qui contient plus de 600 000 plantes vasculaires. Il l'enrichit régulièrement de nouveaux spécimens qu'il collecte lors de ses expéditions dans diverses régions du Canada, aux États-Unis, au Mexique et en Australie. Une fois déposés dans l'Herbier, ces spécimens deviennent partie intégrante des archives végétales permanentes qui nous renseignent sur les lieux où poussent les plantes. Jeff Saarela collabore également avec des botanistes d'autres musées d'histoire naturelle, comme l'Institution Smithsonian de Washington, et des universités de tout le pays.
