Holiday activities at the Museum

Holiday beetles! Be sure to visit the exhibition, Bugs: Outside the Box.

OTTAWA, December 23, 2015 – Make a beeline to the Museum from Dec. 26 to Jan. 3 and step into a world where insects reign. Be a pollinator, or a bug scientist. And that’s just the “bug-inning”.

Daily in the Lab, build your own bug with Crayola ® Model Magic (10 am to noon), and learn how to identify live aquatic insects (1 pm to 4 pm). Young kids will love transforming into a pollinator by donning some butterfly wings or a bee outfit (costumes supplied, from 11 am to 2 pm) and looking for special flowers in the Bird Gallery—a great photo op for parents!  At our Science Corner, check out the cool anatomy of a giant stag beetle model (10 am to noon) then learn how to pin insects, draw them and create your own bug collection (1 pm to 4 pm). All of these great activities are included with museum admission.

Reserve plenty of time to visit our special exhibition, Bugs: Outside the Box. With fascinating, larger-than-life models, live insects, scientific specimens, beautiful projections and fun activities, this exhibition is really creating a lot of “buzz”.  Look for the special flavoured insect dispensing machine! Then, pop down to our Stone Wall Gallery to see beetles like you’ve never seen before in a special photo exhibition, Beetles in Focus.

And for some seasonal fun, see if you can spot the eight tiny reindeer hiding in the exhibits.  (Learn some neat facts about reindeer , or see some festive beetles in the Museum’s latest Nature Scoop).

After such a busy time in the Museum, relax in the Theatre and enjoy the movie, Amazing Might Micro Monsters 3D (a fee applies). Treat yourself to some bug-themed and seasonal goodies in the Nature Café.

All activities except Bugs: Outside the Box, 3D movies, food and merchandise are included with regular museum admission.

·         The Museum closes at 2 pm on December 24 and will be closed all day on December 25.

·         From Dec. 26 to Jan. 3, the Museum is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

·         A special New Year’s brunch will be held on Friday, January 1. For information, visit nature.ca or call 613-232-6976.

·         The Museum will also be closed from January 4-8, 2016 for annual maintenance and cleaning.
