Canadian Museum of Nature welcomes farmers’ market for 2015 and 2016 seasons

Ottawa March 26, 2015—A farmers’ market will enliven the grounds of the Canadian Museum of Nature on Saturdays starting this summer. Ottawa’s Main Farmers’ Market, which was located at Saint Paul University in Old Ottawa East, will relocate temporarily to the museum’s site for the 2015 and 2016 seasons while construction takes place along Main Street. Opening day is May 2.

"We look forward to hosting the market over the next two years," said Meg Beckel, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Nature. "Along with being a great place to learn about natural history, the museum is an important civic destination as well. We’re pleased to see our beautiful museum grounds being enjoyed by the community."

The Main Farmers’ Market features more than 30 vendors offering a range of produce, meats, baked goods and crafts all from within 100 miles of Old Ottawa East. Established in 2007, the community-run market gives customers a unique opportunity to meet and get to know the people who grow and make their food.

"We could not be more pleased with the new partnership with the Canadian Museum of Nature,"  said Sue Cavanaugh, Chair of the Main Farmers’ Market Board of Directors. "Our market has always been committed to making local products available in the downtown core and creating a gathering place for the community. We look forward to continuing this at the museum."

Only one kilometre from its permanent home in Old Ottawa East, the market’s temporary location will make it easier for both customers and vendors to access the market during the extensive construction project on Main Street. The move also offers the residents and local businesses of Centretown a new opportunity to enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients at their doorstep.

The market will operate at the Canadian Museum of Nature, located at 240 McLeod St, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from the beginning of May until the end of October. Numerous bicycle racks are available at the museum. Free parking is available on neighbouring streets and for a fee in the museum’s lots.
