Iridium Spike
In 1979 Walter Alvarez was trying to get a more accurate measurement of how much time was represented by the dark K-Pg layer (formerly the K-T layer) he discovered near Gubbio in Italy. Instead, with his father Luis, he found a more powerful piece of information: the Iridium Spike.
