Leaf Litter
Among the treasures uncovered on Axel Heiberg Island is the preserved leaf litter of an ancient swamp forest. The remains look a bit like the wet leaves you forgot to rake up last autumn. We can use these leaves, and other fossils preserved in nearby mudstone, to identify the types of trees that grew in these long-lost forests of the Canadian Arctic.
