|Insects of Canada
Insects of Canada is a general account of the Canadian insect fauna. It summarizes the taxonomic composition and ecological relationships of its insects in relation to general features of the country.
|Insects make up the majority of all living things, including close to 80% of the approximately 1.5 million named animal species. The insect fauna of Canada is diverse, reflecting the complexity of habitats and topography in the country. In Canada alone there are about 55 000 species of insects and about 11 000 species of mites and spiders. Only about half the species living in Canada have been described.
|The information was adapted from a booklet prepared by the Biological Survey of Canada. The BSC helps coordinate scientific research among specialists on the Canadian fauna of insects, mites, and their relatives. It does so in partnership with the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Entomological Society of Canada.|
