Paul Hamilton curates Canada's National Algae Collection and studies the biodiversity of microscopic life.

Specialties

  • Algae taxonomy.
  • Diatom autecology and taxonomy.
  • Freshwater ecology.
  • Paleolimnology.
  • Aquatic toxicology.

Education

  • MSc., University of Waterloo, 1983. Major Professor: Dr. H.C. Duthie. Study Major: Phycology. Study Minor: Stream Ecology. Thesis title: The role of the physical environment in the river water basin: direct evidence of physically controlled periphyton productivity and biomass in the Matamek and Moisie River water basins, Quebec, Canada.
  • B.Sc. (Honours), University of Western Ontario, 1979. Area of specialization: Plant Physiology.

Profile

Paul Hamilton is the museum's go-to expert on algae, a prominent and abundant life form on Earth. He studies diatoms, which are microbes that help scientists learn about how humans affect their environment, whether it's through local urbanization or global climate change on ecosystem health and biodiversity.

Paul has described 38 new species and two new genera of diatoms. He is coauthor of five books on diatom taxonomy and ecology, and has published more than 120 scientific and technical papers. He is also part of an international teacher-training program that works with nongovernmental environmental interest groups to develop educational packages in environmental science (including interactive software).

Paul is the curator of Canada's National Algae Collection (CANA), which holds over 180 000 specimen identifications and is expected grow to 250 000 in the next few years.
