Biography: Noel Alfonso
Senior Research Assistant, Life Sciences (Ichthyology)
- M.Sc., University of Ottawa, 2001.
- Phylogeny and taxonomy of temperate and Indo-Pacific flatfishes, taxonomy of the lake charr, Salvelinus namaycush, and of catostomids.
- Comparison of the arctic and smooth flounders.
I am doing an appraisal of the species identities of Pleuronectes (formerly Liopsetta) putnami and P. glacialis. They are not separable morphologically and the literature supports this difficulty in identification. An initial analysis was performed that hints at multi- or combination character differences, but I will expand the suite of morphological and meristic characters as well as investigate molecular differences.
- Validity of the Jasper longnose sucker, C. catostomus lacustris
I have applied to the Parks Canada Species at Risk Inventory Fund (SARINV) to collect whole specimens and tissue for genetic analysis of the Jasper longnose sucker, C. catostomus lacustris, a subspecies endemic to Jasper National Park, Alberta.
- Identification of fish species.
- GIS and multivariate statistics.
