In-Class Activity
Adopt a River

A student analysing a water sample.

While participating in the Adopt a River programme, students observe a river's natural environment. They analyse some of its parameters and discover the challenges associated with the conservation of a healthy waterway.

Adopt a River is a great opportunity for teachers to integrate a number of subjects: life sciences, ecology, chemistry, computers and English, into a concrete and stimulating project.

This ecological monitoring project has two main components: observing macroinvertebrates and carrying out physicochemical water analysis. Following the field work and data collection, the students write a scientific report. The data collected are posted on the Water Monitoring Youth Portal.

Students studying the biodiversity of a river.

This project is a collaboration between the Comité de valorisation de la rivière Beauport, the Biosphère of Environment Canada and the Canadian Museum of Nature. The Museum is the project co-ordinator for Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa area (Outaouais). If you are interested in participating in Adopt a River, please contact us to set up an information session.
