General notes. Elven et al. (2003) noted that low-grown arctic plants with compact spikes of few flowers (white to reddish) can be referred to as var. conferta (Fisch. ex Cham. and Schltdl.) A.P. Khokhr. (1991), Sosud. Rast. Sovet. Dal'nego Vostoka 5: 161 [basionym: P. conferta Fisch. ex Cham. and Schltdl. (1826), Linnaea 1: 514] (Khohkhryakov and Mazurenko 1991) (Yurtsev, personal communication).

The Norwegian G. Knaben became interested in the south/north variation in this species in her last years. She believed that she found some taxonomic significant variation, but her results were never completed or published. We need supporting evidence of discontinuity before we formally accept zonal taxa here, but a note is relevant (Elven, in Elven et al. 2003).
