Plants herbs; not colonial; never vegetatively proliferating by bulbils on stems or leaves, in inflorescences, from gemmiphores and gemmae, or by fragmentation; without milky juice; not glandular viscid. Caudex absent. Aerial stems not conspicuously jointed; not filiform. Branches not glaucous. Leaves present; not heterophyllous; not distinctly distichous. Stipules absent; not sheathing; without glands. Petioles present; without sessile glands. Sheaths absent; sheath collars absent. Ligules absent. Leaf blades simple. Leaves not grass-like. Leaves not filiform. Blades straight, without auricles, not septate nodulose. Blade adaxial surface dull, without sessile glands. Blade abaxial surface dull, not glaucous, without sessile glands or glandular hairs. Blade margins flat, blades not lobed. Blade margins entire. Hydathodes absent. Apical leaflet base not distinctly stipitate.
Reproductive morphology. Plants with sporangia. Plants bisexual. Flowering stems conspicuously taller than the leaves; not rooting at the lower nodes. Leaf or reduced bract subtending the base of the inflorescence absent; persistent; without calloused tip. Flowers in inflorescences. Inflorescences without bulbils. Pedicels present. Involucral bracts absent. Inner involucral bracts apex entire. Glumes absent. Callus not differentiated. Flowers radially symmetrical (actinomorphic); bisexual. Sepals modified (but not a pappus). Epicalyx absent. Sepals herbaceous; non-accrescent. Calyx without sessile glands. Calyx margins without cilia. Calyx teeth without or with few glandular verrucae. Petals modified as bristles or perigynia; longer than the calyx; without contrasting markings; not spurred. Corolla helmet not prolonged into a long beak; without 2 small teeth at the apex. Stamens present; stamen filaments all equal in length; free of the corolla. Anthers splitting longitudinally. Receptacle surface glabrous. Styles present. Fruit not surrounded by a perigynium. Perigynia not inflated; not keeled; apex not bidentate or oblique. Fruit without calyx persisting; glabrous. Styles persisting but not modified.
